WASHINGTON, DC: Massachusetts attorney Indira Talwani was confirmed as the newest judge for the US District Court in Boston, by a unanimous vote in the US Senate of 94-0.
Talwani’s confirmation means that she is now the first attorney of Indian origin to hold this particular federal judgeship. She has also become the latest in a recent spate of Indian American appointments by President Barack Obama to get confirmed for federal postings in the judicial branch.
Other Indian-origin litigators who have ascended to key postings are Manish Shah (United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois), Vince Chhabria (United States District Judge for the Northern District of California), and Sri Srinivasan (United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit).
Talwani earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982 from Harvard College, where she graduated cum laude. She then earned her Juris Doctorate (JD) from the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley in 1988; again, she graduated with honors, this time with the Order of the Coif, a prestigious honor society of law school graduates at UC Berkeley.
After her schooling, Talwani served as clerk for Judge Stanley Weigel in northern California, was an associate at the San Francisco law firm of Altshuler Berzon LLP, and began working at Segal Roitman LLP in 1999. Most recently, she was a partner at the law firm of Segal Roitman LLP in Boston.
Talwani was originally nominated by Obama in late September, and was re-nominated in January. In a statement about Talwani’s nomination, President Obama said, at the time, that he was “grateful for [her] willingness to serve and confident that [she] will apply the law with the utmost impartiality and integrity.” Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) also voiced her approval of Obama’s selection at the time of Talwani’s nomination.
In her new position as a judge for the US District Court in Boston, Talwani will fill the seat vacated by Judge Mark L. Wolf, who has moved on to a more senior-level position. He was a US District Court Judge in Boston from 2006-2012.
