NEW DELHI: Days before he officially becomes the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi’s wife Jashodaben – who lives separately – has said that she is “happy” and “honored” to be acknowledged by him as his wife.

Speaking to TV9 – a Gujarati-language news channel aired in Modi’s home state, which he has ruled as Chief Minister for 13 years, Jashodaben said she was very happy and honored to be Modi’s wife, and that she will continue to stand by his side and wish him continued success in the political realm.
“It is a matter of extreme happiness for me. I am so proud being his wife,” she told TV9, in an interview on Wednesday. “He, for the first time, accepted me as his wife when he filed the form in Vadodara in 2014. As after so many years, he accepted me as his wife, I feel good. He remembers me even after so many years.”
Modi’s marital history briefly threatened to become a serious point of contention during the run-up to India’s election, which ended last Friday with the announcement that Modi and the BJP decimated the Congress Party and the UPA by historic margins.
During Modi’s four assembly elections, when he was running in the state of Gujarat, the statesman never declared that he was married on any of the mandatory forms he filed. But when officially filing for the national election earlier this year, he put down that he was, in fact, married. It was later revealed that this spouse is Jashodaben, a 62 year-old from a village very close to Modi’s.
The couple separated many years ago, although the reason why remains vague. In the TV9 interview, Jashodaben implied that Modi simply left to pursue his political career, and that the marriage itself was never officially dissolved. She shied away from giving a firm answer, however, regarding what their relationship will be now that Modi is running the country, saying only that if he asks to see her, she will go.
The Congress Party pounced on the fact that Modi concealed his marriage from the public, saying that it was an indication of Modi’s inherently duplicitous nature. After all, they said, if he could hide this, what else may he be hiding from the Indian people?
But in the end, it mattered not. Modi and the BJP have won a dominating majority of India’s Parliament, and are gearing up to move ahead with planned widespread economic reforms.
