WASHINGTON, DC: California Democrat Congressman Ami Bera, speaking at a House Committee on Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific hearing, emphasized the importance of the US forging closer ties with India, and to further promote bilateral trade to create more jobs in both countries.
“We need to further promote bilateral trade, which will ultimately lead to more jobs in both countries,” said Bera.
Officials from the State Department and the Department of Commerce testified at the hearing entitled, “U.S. India Relations Under the Modi Government.”
Bera offered the following comment: “As an Indian-American, I am proud that the Indian diaspora has made many remarkable accomplishments in the United States. Especially notable is India’s foreign direct investment, which has resulted in more than 100,000 jobs in the United States. I strongly believe that the US-India relationship can be the defining relationship of the 21st century. We need to further promote bilateral trade, which will ultimately lead to more jobs in both countries. I look forward to Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to the U.S. to reinvigorate our ties with a natural friend and partner.”
Born and raised in California, Bera represents Sacramento County. He is a physician and the only Indian American currently serving in Congress. A proponent for strengthening United States’ strategic and trading relationship with India and Asia, Bera is a member of the House Foreign Affairs committee and is working to open Asian markets to California products to create new jobs.
