NEW DELHI: Stem cord banking has got a huge fillip in India with the approval of the glamorous actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who emphasized the value of it, at a promotional event in Chennai.
Bachchan, who is the brand ambassador of LifeCell and mother of a two-and-a-half-years old daughter, Aaradhya, talked of the potential of stem cells in treating serious ailments. She said that it is a “simple yet precious” gift for a child.
“The decision to bank an umbilical cord cell had to be taken at a time when taking baby steps to parenthood. And on our part, we did some research, spoke to friends and our families, of course. We were informed about it,” said Bachchan, reported the Press Trust of India.
Aishwarya was in Chennai on Sunday to celebrate the milestone achievement of Life cell’s preserving 100,000 umbilical cord stem cell units.
LifeCell is India’s largest umbilical cord blood stem cell bank, and is setting up a public stem cell bank at a cost of 30 crore INR. The cord blood will be stored at LifeCell’s own internationally recognized facility in Chennai.
Since it was Parents’ Day as well, Rai, with her usual panache had a great quip for that too: “Every day is Parents’ Day. We are meant to have such a beautiful experience in our lives and let us celebrate that emotion every week and day in our lives.”
