Serve the poor in India, not waste water, says Hyderabad-based woman.

BANGALORE: Bollywood celebrities and sports icons in India have been busy taking the social media phenomenon Ice Bucket Challenge, to spread awareness about a serious neurologic condition called the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, by donating money or by pouring a bucket of ice over oneself, and then challenging another to do the same.
Now, inspired by the Ice Bucket Challenge, which got global recognition through #IceBucketChallenge on Facebook, Manju Latha Kalanidhi, a Hyderabad-based woman, has started an Indian version of the challenge.
In this desi version, poor Indians get an offering of a bucket of rice or cooked rice/biryani. The ‘game’ is named Rice Bucket Challenge and every time one does an offering, he/she should use #RiceBucketChallenge to post a picture or video and challenge their friends to do the same.
The official Facebook page of Rice Bucket Challenge reads “Indian version for Indian Needs, Let’s challenge our friends to take up the #RiceBucketChallenge.”
The challenge also allows people to donate medicines worth Rs. 100 to any nearby government hospital, where the poor and the marginalized get affordable treatment.
Manju Latha Kalanidhi wrote on her Facebook wall: “It’s local, desi and a practical solution to issues in the vicinity. Instead of wasting water on an ice bucket challenge, save water and feed the hungry.”
As the post suggests, it’s an irony that a country that has severe scarcity of drinking water is wasting gallons for a game that western nations can afford to do.
The official page of Rice Bucket Challenge is receiving overwhelming support – the page has received more than a 1000 likes and is going viral.
