BANGALORE: It might be one among the big wigs in the online industry, but a recent poll survey conducted by Ranker.com lists Facebook as the most evil online company in the world, with Comcast as second.
According to Ranker.com, the websites listed in the most evil list, force users to add them on Facebook, makes them sign up to their terms and conditions, and invade privacy, including all contacts from smartphones.
It is a known fact that many below average websites and apps use Facebook add-on as a tool popularly known as Facebook Connect to extract contacts and other vital details. As people are less interested in reading the privacy policies, they take websites and apps for granted. But as a result of this, private information of users is misused for services that they feel are inevitable in the digital age.
Facebook is one of the most used social networking sites in the world; this has given an opportunity for other websites to collaborate with them while signing up so that they can get access to personal details of the users, which otherwise many hesitate to divulge.
Coveted companies like Apple, Go Daddy and online payment service PayPal are all part of the evil list, which means no data on the internet is safe. Google, the top search engine providing traffic to millions of websites is not exempted from the list either. Both Facebook and Google have been in news for various privacy based issues and that they have a tendency to peep into the privacy of people around the world.
Facebook insists in providing personal details to sign up for an account. If one fails to fill personal details and priorities, Facebook pesters the user with frequent notifications that force them to fill up the details. Even though Facebook doesn’t show protected details to people other than friends, the Facebook add-ons used by other websites for signing up can extract these details.
So the next time you press the OK button for signing up an app or website using your Facebook id, better keep in mind that it could result in them using your personal details for other purposes.
Ranker.com is a crowd sourced poll website with more than a million people sharing opinions every month on various topics which are both entertaining and practical.
