NEW YORK: It’s not just Shah Rukh Khan and Irrfan Khan who get into trouble with US immigration, turns out a lot of other prominent Khans too are harassed and given a tough time over mistaken identity: the latest victim is Britain’s two time world boxing champion and their sporting pride Amir Khan.
Khan was turned back at Manchester airport on Thursday as he tried to check in for a Virgin Atlantic fight, probably because he was mistakenly flagged up on a watch-list, reported Daily Mail.
It appeared Khan’s Muslim name and frequent trips to Pakistan had confused American immigration officials who initially approved his working visa application. However, lawyers in London and Los Angeles hurriedly secured clearance for his visit, and Khan tweeted that he had even spoken to prime minister David Cameron to help.
Khan was trying to reach in time to take his seat at ringside for Floyd Mayweather’s Saturday re-match with Marcos Maidana, said the Mail report.
Now that he is on his way to the US, Khan will land in Las Vegas just in time to hurry to the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Khan’s appearance will enable him to continue pressing Mayweather to make good on his promise that they will meet in the ring before he retires at the end of next year. Khan has defeated Maidana in the past.
Shah Rukh Khan may get another taste of US immigration when he comes to the US soon to promote his SLAM! tour concerts, to promote his upcoming film ‘Happy New Year’. In the past, he has been detained at US airports and interrogated for hours to establish his credentials.
After Irrfan Khan got the same raw treatment, he vowed to never again visit the US again.
