NEW YORK: In a rare New York appearance, the virtuoso Indian vocalist Kaushiki Chakrabarty will perform a lyrical program displaying the exquisitely rich vocal traditions of south and north India at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on November 14.
‘Masters of Indian Music: Kaushiki Chakrabarty’ is a special one-night-only performance presented in conjunction with the exhibition ‘Treasures from India: Jewels from the Al-Thani Collection’, according to a press release.
Complementing the exhibition’s dazzling jeweled objects from the private collection of Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Thani, Chakrabarty performs with her signature musicality and expression. The daughter of renowned Indian singers Chandana Chakraborty and Ajoy Chakraborty, she ranks among the leading new South Asian vocalists.
Also presented alongside the exhibition, in January 2015, Surupa Sen and Bijayini Satpathy, the principal dancers of India’s world-renowned Nrityagram dance troupe, will perform the New York premiere of Samyoga (“conjunction of two heavenly bodies”), a program of solos and duets set to an original live score composed by Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi.
The exhibition Treasures from India: Jewels from the Al-Thani Collection is on view October 28, 2014 –January 25, 2015.
Chakraborty was born in Kolkata, and has been learning music since the age of seven. She has participated in many major concerts, including the Dover Lane Music Conference, the ITC Sangeet Sammelan in India, the Spring Festival of Music (California), and Parampara Program (Los Angeles). Her first major concert was at the age of 16 at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi.
