India also has a record breaking number of internet users who spend time watching online pornography, according to a report in Quartz. The report is based on data accessed by Quartz from one of the largest adult content website, Pornhub.com; shedding light into the sexual preferences of India’s internet users.
The report is based on the visits of Indians to Pornhub.com during Sept. 2013 – Sept 2014. It comes on the heels of the central government’s announcement last week to ban adult content websites in India by introducing web filter on such content.
According to Quartz, India will soon become the second largest consumers of its adult content, next to the US, which generates 40% of its page views.
The north-east belt and Delhi spend more time on the adult web site, viewing more pages and spending more time on a single page. The average time spent by an Indian on the website is 8.22 minutes per session.
Even after Sunny Leone’s retirement from the adult industry and her later Bollywood entry, Internet users in India have voted her as their favourite porn actress followed by Lisa Ann and Priya Rai.
India is the second largest market for smartphones and this has resulted in more than 50% of users visiting the adult web site using smartphones. Android traffic from India is the third highest in the world. Meanwhile, traffic from tablets is just 2.5% when compared to 47.5% from desktops.
Almost 23% of total visitors from India to the website are females, which is 2% more than the global average. The most searched keywords by women are “lesbian” and “gay.”
Quartz also reports that Pornhub has most active users from India during Saturdays, whereas in other countries like UK, US, Germany and Brazil, Mondays seems to be a popular day.
The website received the biggest dip in traffic from India during the week of Diwali with a drop of 35% traffic. Interestingly the traffic increased during the Independence Day and Republic Day holidays.
