BENGALURU: It’s now official: the Chinese Smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi will launch its new phablet Redmi Note in the Indian market on December 2.
Redmi Note, priced at Rs. 8,999, will make its entry through Flipkart, the official retail partner of Xiaomi in India. According to the official announcement, Xiaomi is planning to sell about 50,000 Redmi Note units in the maiden flash sale.
However, putting an end to the honeymoon days with Flipkart, Xiaomi has now got a new partner as well, Airtel, which has the largest number of mobile subscribers in India.
Xiaomi will sell the 4G version of Redmi Note exclusively through the Airtel flagship stores located in six cities where 4G LTE service is currently available. These exclusive stores will have a Mi zone where people can experience the features of the phone including the 4G speed.
However, those who plan to buy the Xiaomi Redmi Note will have to register in advance through Flipkart or Airtel stores. The online registration for the smartphone in Flipkart will commence on September 25. People who register via Airtel stores will be assigned a date to pick up their 4G LTE phones. As a complementary offer for people buying from Airtel Stores, the company is offering a new Airtel USIM for free.
Xiaomi is offering the 4G version of Redmi Note for Rs. 9,999 and this is the cheapest 4G LTE smartphone available in India till now. According to reports, the first batch 4G LTE variant of Redmi Note will also have 50,000 units for sale. The registration for the smartphone is expected to start in Airtel stores from mid-December said Manu Jain, Head of Xiaomi in India.
Jain said, “We have received tremendous response in the short time that we have been here. We are very excited to launch the much awaited Redmi Note. Our fans will also have easier access to our products from Airtel’s flagship stores.”
The latest iterant of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G LTE is a dual band smartphone that can operate on TDD 23MHz and FDD-1800 MHz band frequencies.
Redmi Note is powered by MediaTek Octa-core 1.7 GHz MTK 6592 processor and Mali 450 GPU coupled with 2 GB RAM. The 5.5 inch HD IPS display has a pixel resolution of 1280 x 720. The device has dual camera, 13 MP in the rear and a 5 MP in the front for taking selfies.
The 8 GB internal storage of the smartphone can be expanded up to 32 GB via external microSD card.
Under-the-hood of the new Xiaomi device is a 3,100 mAh battery, capable of running the smartphone for a whole day. Hopefully, Xiaomi might have resolved the heating issue experienced in the earlier two models.
Redmi Note runs on Xiaomi’s own MIUI v5 on top of the customized Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. Xiaomi has also announced an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the device with a updated MIUI 6 interface.
Xiaomi Vice President Hugo Barra said, “Innovation is the key at Xiaomi. We want to build an ecosystem of innovation and for that we are looking at investing in start-ups. The start-up ecosystem here (in India) is very vibrant. People are coming back and doing a lot of interesting things around technology, and we want to bring that to the people. In that sense, we are venture capitalists. But it’s more than just investment.”
