BENGALURU: Yu, the recently launched subsidiary company of Micromax, today unveiled its first smartphone named Yureka, a 4G handset that is expected to go on sale via Amazon starting from January at Rs.8,999 ($143).
When Xiaomi entered India with low-cost, high-end smartphones, it seemed like the fate of Micromax and other Indian smartphone manufacturers was sealed. But, Yu has reinvigorated the Indian smartphone industry by unveiling Yureka, a device with smart specifications; more importantly with features that defy all Xiaomi devices launched till now in India.
Yureka is an Android smartphone, but it runs CyanogenMod on top of it, offering more customization options for users. CyanogenMod is a mobile OS, based on the Android platform. It is developed as free and open source software based on the official releases of Android by Google, with added original and third-party code.
One of the main advantages of the CyanogenMod is the availability of features and options that is otherwise absent in official firmware released by smartphone vendors. This includes features such as native theming support, FLAC audio Codec support, privacy guard, CPU overclocking etc.
Rahul Sharma, the founder of Micromax, said “Going ahead, it will be about software more than hardware. Customization and service will play an important role in determining the success of a brand. Yu imparts power to consumers to redefine the mobile space in the country by simply giving the control in a user’s hand.”
Yureka 4G is powered by a Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor which has a 64-bit CPU architecture, featuring integrated 4G LTE for the optimal performance with seamless communications and outstanding battery life. The octa-core processor is coupled with 2 GB RAM and an Adreno 405 GPU for faster processing of applications and heavy graphic games.
The device also features a 16 GB internal memory with 12.5 GB usable space. This can be expanded up to 32 GB using external microSD card.
Coming to the camera department of the new Yu Yureka 4G mobile it has a 13 MP rear camera with Sony sensor and a 5 MP front camera for selfie enthusiasts. The smartphone is backed up by a powerful 2500 mAh battery.
Rahul Sharma also added that “Yu will allow users to root their devices, without voiding the warranty. This will allow users to run endless customization on their device and offer an enhanced product experience, presently not being supported by any other brand in the country.”
