Denham says Obama architect of mass deportations.

WASHINGTON, DC: At the GOP retreat in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Rep. Jeff Denham has claimed that House leadership is “committed” to addressing the firebrand issues with far-reaching legislation. The party’s most vocal supporter of comprehensive immigration reform was also critical of the deportations carried out during President Obama’s tenure in the White House.
“We’re the party of deportation? Look at this president’s numbers!” Denham was quoted as saying.
The California congressman revealed he is working with other politicians to lay the groundwork for comprehensive immigration reform in 2015. According to Denham the plans have the support of top-ranking Republicans.
“I think leadership’s commitment is not only to bring up immigration reform, but to bring it up in multiple different bills. The question is the timing of that and the sequence of those bills,” Denham told reporters in Hershey.
Denham’s declaration goes decidedly against the grain of the party’s perceived stance on immigration. Speaker John Boehner once warned Obama that moving ahead on executive actions would kill any chance of immigration reform, and earlier this week the Republican-controlled House voted to reverse the president’s executive order deferring the deportation of young immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.
“I think by adding the deferred action amendment in here, it goes back to a situation where you’ve got kids that came here through no fault of their own that we need to have a full discussion and debate on that now are going to be put at the top of the list for [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] to deport,” Denham said. “I think that sends the wrong message to the American public on what our overall reform ideas are.”
Rep. Denham was one of only 26 Republicans who voted against the amendment.
