BENGALURU: Navigating marriage in India can be tricky business with relatives and friends constantly trying to intervene, which is why 23-year-old Indhuja Pillai, a Bengaluru-based engineer, took matters into her own hands and took the unprecedented step of creating her own website to help her find a groom.
She made the decision to do after realizing she didn’t like the details in a personal ad her parents had composed.
“I wear glasses and look dorky in them,” “NOT a womanly woman,” and “definitely not marriage material” are all tidbits that Pillai includes on her website, and her endearing forthrightness has taken the internet by storm.
In the three weeks since it launched, Pillai’s site has gone viral, but the self-proclaimed tomboy still has yet to make a decision regarding her future.
“Looking for: A man, preferably bearded, who is passionate about seeing the world. Someone who earns for himself and does NOT hate his job. Must be flexible with his parents, also means, it’s better if he is NOT a family guy. Extra points to the one who hates kids. Points for a great voice and an impressive personality. Should be able to hold a conversation for [at least] 30 minutes.”
Think you meet the criteria? Pillai has a few words of advice before you go falling head-over-heels:
“If you think you qualify, I recommend you re-think. If you are sure, I suggest you show this website to your parents. If you’re still sure, try imagining a life with someone like me. Unsure? click the ‘X’ and get back to what you were doing. Sure? Drop me a message on Facebook or tweet to me.”
Pillai told CNN-IBN that the positive international response to her website has taken her completely by surprise.
“When posted my matrimonial thing, I expected a lot of criticism. Instead I got a lot of praise. But, I never expected this kind of response. It is really overwhelming.”
