WASHINGTON, DC: An Indian American man from Seaside, California, Richard Singh, was among two men convicted earlier this month of killing two men in an August 2013 “ambush-style” attack, in Aromas.
Singh and Jordan Killens faced a week of prosecutorial evidence before the defense put on two witnesses who defended Killens for 20 minutes, reported The Californian. The jury deliberated for less than a day before rendering a guilty decision, prosecutors said. Now, the duo faces the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The Monterey Herald reported Killens and Richard Singh were found guilty of luring the victims, Navneal Singh and Demetrius Safford, to Dunbarton Road in Aromas by telling them they would all do a home invasion robbery together, according to court testimony. After a brief conversation on the side of the road, Killins and Singh grabbed their firearms and shot the men multiple times in the back, killing them at the scene, prosecutors said.
On August 11, 2013, Monterey County sheriff’s deputies found 23-year-old Demetrius Safford and 22-year-old Navneal Singh dead on Dunbarton Road off Highway 101 in Aromas. Both Sacramento men sustained several gunshot wounds to the back, the Californian report said.
Eventually, the case went cold, prosecutors said. Last year, Monterey County Sheriff’s Detective Martin Opseth was assigned to re-evaluate the evidence and consider new possibilities.
Richard Singh was first arrested in March 2014, but was later released based on insufficient evidence, Monterey County Sheriff’s Detective Matthew Davis testified last week.
After the arrest Singh, “kind of chuckled at me and said, ‘I can beat this,'” Davis testified.
Ultimately, it was about a year before detectives gathered enough evidence to make an arrest stick. Richard Singh was re-arrested in July 2014. Killens was arrested a month later on the anniversary of Navneal Singh’s and Safford’s deaths, the California repored.
Navneal Singh was no relation to Richard Singh, prosecutors said. Working with Monterey County District Attorney Investigator Peter Austen, Opseth testified last week, early on in the investigation he realized Richard Singh, Eric Romero and Ronald Saxton were in constant contact with Navneal Singh on the day he died.
Monterey County Superior Court Judge Julie Culver will sentence the two on June 3.
