FAIRFAX COUNTY ( V.A.): Athletes from the United States are way ahead of the rest of the competition on the penultimate day of the 2015 World Police & Fire Games which conclude here on Sunday, while cops and firefighters from India remain 10th in medal tally.
So far, America won a total of 1,550 medals, including 608 gold and 507 silver medals. Canada is second in medal tally with a total 376, including 143 gold medals. Russia (196 total medals), Spain (180), Brazil (165), United Kingdom (130), Australia (108), Chinese Taipei (100) and Germany (90) are the other countries ahead of India in the medal tally.
India has won 44 gold, 17 silver and 11 bronze medals.
The 10-day event, titled The Games of Heroes, began with an opening ceremony at Robert F Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, DC, on June 26th.
In all 12,000 athletes belonging various law-enforcement agencies from 70 countries are competing in more than 60 sports — that include from angling, archery and baseball to tug of war, weightlifting and wrestling. There are 1,600 medal events.
Fifty-three sporting arenas in Fairfax County and the greater Washington area being used for the 10-day event. The Games will conclude with a half-marathon at the Reston Town Center in Reston, VA.
The festive atmosphere of the Games was marred by the death of Brazilian cyclist Carlos Silva, after his tire blew while traveling at a high speed on Thursday.
