Groundbreaking decision gives LGBT equal rights.

WASHINGTON, DC: In a groundbreaking ruling, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued a decision that deemed workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal.
With its decision, the federal agency said that employers who discriminate against LGBT workers are violating Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibits employment discrimination “based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.”
In the past, courts have ruled that Title VII does not cover discrimination based on sexual orientation because it’s not explicitly mentioned in the law’s phrasing, but the EEOC’s verdict changes that notion, reported Time magazine.
“The fight for basic civil rights protections for lesbian, gay, and bisexual people just took a big step forward,” the American Civil Liberties Union’s LGBT Project Director James Esseks told the Washington Examiner. “Lesbian, gay and bisexual people all across the country now have a place to turn if an employer fires them because of their sexual orientation. This is a significant development because protections for gay and transgender people are almost nonexistent in federal law, and 28 states also lack state-level protections.”
Before Thursday’s decision, the federal government and 28 states did not prohibit employers from discriminating based on sexual orientation. The American Civil Liberties Union maintains that Congress still needs to pass laws to protect LGBT and transgender workers because the protections shouldn’t be left to the courts and do not ban discrimination in housing, public accommodations and federal funding.
Just Monday, however, the Department of Housing and Urban Development issued new guidance on rules in an attempt to protect members of the LGBT community from discrimination in federally subsidized housing, especially in programs designed for senior Americans.
