Police in Chennai have arrested a Malayalam actress and two others for producing forged documents in order to gain a U.S. visa.
Neethu Krishna Vasu, 27, who has acted in the Malayalam movie “Celebrations,” arrived at the U.S. Consulate in Chennai on Tuesday for a visa interview. She was accompanied by Justin Thomas of Ernakulam and P. Subash of Alappuzha.
Neethu and the others had already submitted documents, including a marriage invitation card. They claimed they were going to the US for a performance at the wedding. However, upon closer scrutiny, officials found the invitation was forged and the three admitted as much during further inquiries.
They claimed that film producer Raju from Andhra Pradesh and Kunjumon from Kerala had promised to take them to the US where they could earn money by performing at marriage parties.
Neethu told the consular officials that she had given Raju 2 lakh for “processing the visa formalities,” reported The Times of India.
“He told me that he has fixed my program in a marriage celebration in the US…and I believed him,” she said, adding that Raju instructed her to show up for the interview, according to the New Indian Express.
The consular officials subsequently handed them over to the Royapettah police, and based on a complaint from the consulate assistant security officer, police registered a case and arrested the trio. A court later remanded them to judicial custody.
