There seems to be a deluge of Indian American themed shows and comedies in the works, on major networks, apart from the hit documentary ‘Meet the Patels’ which was recently bought for a pilot and of course, Priyanka Chopra popularizing Bollywood in the US television industry with her turn in ABC’s serial ‘Quantico’.
NBC has put in development ‘I Love Lakshmi’, a multi-camera family comedy from Universal TV and studio-based Aggregate (Growing Up Fisher), reported Deadline.
The project is co-written by Muffy Bolding and Doug Prochilo and inspired by Prochilo’s real-life experience marrying into an Indian family. He is married to Universal TV president Bela Bajaria.
‘I Love Lakshmi’ follows the trials and tribulations of new parents, Danny and Lakshmi, as they endure Lakshmi’s own meddlesome immigrant parents — whose version of the American dream never included a Danny, reported Deadline.
At NBC, I Love Lakshmi joins another Indian American-themed comedy, Pre-Madonna, from Uni TV and Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Prods., which has a put pilot commitment. Written by filmmaker Nisha Ganatra inspired by her adolescence, the project finds Sarita Gupta entering a Chicago high school in 1983 and navigating the painful and hilarious path of finding out who she really is.
