A local court in Odisha’s Keonjhar district has sentenced five people to death for gang-raping and killing a 13-year-old girl in Barbil in 2012.
According to The Hindu, additional Sessions Judge of Champua, Jadumani Mishra, sentenced five persons, identified as Mata Munda, Jiten Munda, Biswanath Gopa, Mangal Purty and Harjeet Singh, to death.
The girl was returning from tuition class when seven persons forcibly took her away to a nearby forest and gang raped her, the prosecution said in the court. The heinous incident happened on August 1, 2012, in a jungle area of Belkundi village near Barbil in Keonjhar district.
The accused men sexually assaulted her and later killed her, fearing that she might disclose their identity. According to reports, five of the accused persons were arrested but two others are still at large.
