Derek Madina, a Florida man who killed his wife and posted a picture of her corpse on Facebook was found guilty by the Jury of second-degree murder on Wednesday.
Medina admitted taking the picture of his dead wife Jennifer Alfonso (27), on his phone and later uploading it onto the social media site.
He failed to convince the Jury that he shot his wife in self-defense. He had claimed that the murder happened during an altercation while Alfonso threatened him with a knife in their home in Miami on August 2013.
Prosecutors successfully argued Alonso was in fear of her life when she was killed. They are expected to seek a life sentence for Madina (33) at a hearing set for January.
“No family should ever have to see their daughter killed and then exhibited worldwide on the internet like some macabre trophy to a husband’s anger as was Jennifer Alfonso,” Miami-Dade State’s Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement.
“Far, far too often this kind of domestic violence leads to injury and death. That’s why we all must end all forms of domestic violence,” she said.
When he posted the picture, Madina wrote on Facebook that “Im going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys miss you guys takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news.”
“My wife was punching me and I am not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did I hope you understand me,” he added. The image and post stayed five hours before it was removed.
Medina married Alfonso in 2010. The couple divorced in early 2012, then remarried a few months later.
