Popular Calgary (Canada) MLA, Manmeet Bhullar, who died in a road accident, will receive a state memorial service in Calgary on Sunday.
Bhullar, 35, was killed Monday afternoon after he got out of his car in an attempt to aid another motorist on a snowy highway, reported CBC news.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said a vehicle skidded off the Queen Elizabeth II Highway north of Red Deer and rolled onto the median. Bhullar was one of two motorists who tried to help.
A semi-truck on the same stretch of highway lost control, hitting one of the parked vehicles and careening into the median. Bhullar was struck as he was walked between his vehicle and the rollover.
He was rushed to hospital, but later died. No one else was hurt in the incident.
The Progressive Conservative MLA for Calgary-Greenway will be memorialized Sunday at the Jubilee Auditorium, reported CBC.
The Globe and Mail reported that Alberta politicians laughed through their tears as Progressive Conservative leader Ric McIver recounted stories about his colleague Bhullar at the legislature.
McIver says Bhullar, who was 35, loved to joke with fellow MLA Sandra Jansen that he grew up watching her as a TV anchor, and in caucus often asked her to sing her station’s promotional jingle.
He says Bhullar – who sported a thick, black beard – would tease caucus mate Richard Starke that his moustache couldn’t match Bhullar’s facial hair at age 12.
Many dabbed their eyes with tissues or fought back tears during he tribute for Bhullar, the report said.
Premier Rachel Notley told the house that Bhullar will be remembered as a man of powerful compassion fueled by his faith.
