Nabina Basnet, formerly second runner-up in the Miss Nepal US competition, was recently appointed Honorary Nepal Tourism Goodwill Ambassador by the Nepal Tourism Board.
“After the devastating earthquake that took more than 8,000 lives and injured more than 17,000, our beautiful nation Nepal is still struggling to get back on its feet,” Basnet informed The American Bazaar via email. “Since the earthquake, a lot of tourists have abandoned their plans to come to Nepal and I want to advocate about Nepal Tourism and erase the misconception about Nepal being unsafe for travels.”
Basnet has a degree in Media and Television from Richland College in Dallas, Texas, and is currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science.
Aside from her involvement with the Nepal Tourism Board, Basnet is also an ambassador for the Washington DC-based Gorkhaly Foundation, which is a volunteer-run organization that is committed to raising funds toward the development of Nepal.
Since April 2015, the foundation has almost exclusively focused its efforts on relief and rebuilding efforts in Barpak, the epicenter of the earthquake, and committing to help rebuild Barpak one establishment at a time.
Exactly after a year of the devastation Gorkhaly Foundation together with Bir Bahadhur Ghale of Barpak Rural Electrification — with grant support from Nat Geo’s Great Energy Challenge — successfully rehabilitated and upgraded Barpak’s Micro Hydro power plant that was damaged by the earthquake.
Barpak now has 24-hour access to electricity, which will help significantly in the rebuilding efforts as well as restoring the economy.
