It is one of the rarest of the rare cases in medical history, but for a one-year old boy in Delhi going through the ordeal of early puberty and his family, it’s a harrowing experience, as he started developing pubic hair and sexual urge.
The one-year-old boy named Vaibhav (name changed on request of parents) has been diagnosed with a rare medical condition called precocious or early puberty, reported The Hindustan Times.
The parents of the infant were quoted by the national daily saying that they noticed the violent changes in Vaibhav’s body after six months. They observed he was taller than other children of his age and his genitals had started growing abnormally.
“We thought maybe he was just a big baby, so we did not take him to the doctor. But by the time he was one, it was apparent there was something wrong. My mother-in-law, who has taken care of several children in the family, also said that his growth seemed unnatural. That is when we took him to the doctor,” said his mother to The Hindustan Times.
“His penis had grown to that of a man’s size and we knew something was wrong,” she added.
Doctor Vaishakhi Rustagi who is treating the boy said, “Usually this disorder is caused due to brain or stomach tumor, but we didn’t find anything as such in blood reports. The child was lucky in a way because tumor usually increases complications and leads to cancer.”
According to medical experts, precocious or early puberty is a rare medical condition where the testosterone of a kid shoots up causing aggressive physical growth similar to a fully grown adult. Such cases are only reported once in 10 years. They also confirm that early puberty is traumatic for a child of this age and it makes them violent, some even experience sexual urge.
The pediatrician treating the boy is of the opinion that if the boy is left untreated he will become violent and his muscle strength will reach a level that his parents cannot control. He also added that Vaibhav will stop growing after a few years, if his hormone level is left untreated and remain about 3-4 feet tall.
The boy was put on hormone therapy soon after the parents complained about his abnormal growth and his voice had started to break. Five months after the therapy started, the hormonal development and genital size of the boy decreased. Now he is on a monthly dosage that blocks effects of hormones. The treatment will continue until he is mentally stable enough to grasp the changes in his body.
