Indian-American business man from Schaumburg, Raja Krishnamoorthi, who is a Democratic Congressional candidate from Illinois, will be introduced as one of party’s emerging leaders during the Democratic National Convention at Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Mr Krishnamoorthi and Stephanie Murphy from Florida are the only two congressional candidates to have been invited to the DNC stage as the party’s rising star or emerging leader, PTI reports.
Raja Krishnamoorthi won the Democratic Party’s Congressional primary in Illinois on March 16, and was endorsed by President Barack Obama last month.
“As the son of immigrants who worked their way into the middle-class, Raja understands both the challenges facing America’s working families and the opportunities their work make possible,” Obama said in his endorsement.
He was also been endorsed by other top Democratic leaders like Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
Mr Krishnamoorthi faces Republican Party’s Peter DiCianni who ran unopposed during the primary. If elected Mr Krishnamoorthi would join Ami Bera in the US House of representatives in the next Congress beginning January 2017.
Krishnamoorthi, 42, was born in Delhi and grew up in Peoria, Illinois, served as policy director in the Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign. He also served as Deputy Treasurer of Illinois from 2007-2009 under Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, and in 2010 ran for the Democratic nomination for Illinois State Comptroller, losing to David E Miller by less than one per cent of the vote.
He is the co-founder of InSPIRE, a non-profit organization that provides training to Illinois students and veterans in solar technology.
“I am… someone who believes very much in entrepreneurship and helping small businesses to grow because I believe that they are at the heart of economy,” he told The American Bazaar in an interview earlier.
