The New York state legislature has declared August as Indian-American Heritage Month. Rockland County has decided to organize a dance performance at the Legislature on August 2 as part of celebrations. Rockland County Legislator Aney Paul has invited a group of dancers to perform prior to the start of the board’s meeting.
“Like our invited guests, I am so proud to share part of my heritage with the larger community. The performers will offer a glimpse of some of the dances that are part of India’s rich cultural fabric and by doing so, allow others to share in a valuable cultural experience,” Paul said.
Bindya Prasad, a well-known dance teacher and the principal of the Mayura School of Arts, will join with her students Ashwin Kumar, Cinna Chandran, Merin Jacob and Urmila Rani Nair in presenting the dances.
Prasad has expanded her school to eight locations in the Tristate area, including offering classes at the Clarkstown Reformed Church in West Nyack. They will combine various forms of classical Indian dances into their presentation.
The New York State Legislature has passed a resolution declaring August as Indian-American Heritage Month. The measure was sponsored by Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski and Senator David Carlucci. On behalf of the Indian community, Legislator Paul thanks them for sponsoring the resolution.
“We have a very robust and engaged Indian American Community here in Rockland, and throughout the entire State of New York,” Zebrowski said. “I am proud to have sponsored a resolution declaring August 2016 Indian-American Heritage Month in New York State. Together with Rockland County’s resolution, we will be able to celebrate the diversity and wonderful Indian culture throughout the month of August.”
Paul said she plans to deliver a Proclamation noting Indian-American Heritage Month when the Rockland County India Day parade takes place on Aug. 20.
