A 40-year-old man drowned to death in Madhya Pradesh while trying to save a cow which was drowning in a canal on Sunday. Though the man managed to save the life of the cow, he could not swim back to the shore and was swept away in the current.
The man identified as Raju Jogi, a resident of Bamhori village was running a tea shop near Bamhori bus stop. While working at his tea shop, Jogi saw a cow fell into the nearby canal on Sunday evening. Though many people had gathered around the canal attempting to rescue, nobody could save the cow as the current was much stronger
Understanding that the animal was in trouble, Jogi acted quickly and jumped into the water. He tied the animal with a rope and saved it with the help of others. But, Jogi could not stay afloat in the water and was swept away by the strong current. Even the desperate attempts of the people who stood on the shore couldn’t save him.
“This is also a difficult time for many who stood on the canal, as Raju struggled to hold on. A few of them attempted to help him but unfortunately, he was taken away by the raging waters while the cow was rescued,” a police officer told The Times of India.
The police launched a rescue operation with the help of divers, but his body was recovered after four hours. The body was sent to post-mortem analysis.
Last week, a truck driver had drowned to death in a river in Raisen to escape from being lynched by a mob for running over cows. The incident happened on Thursday in Sultanpur town where the driver Manu Bhai and his assistant Mohsin Khan jumped into the river to escape from a mob that beat them up after three cows were killed by their truck.
Mohsin Khan swam back to the shore safely. But Manu Bhai drowned in the river. His body was recovered about 15 kilometers away on Sunday.
