Swathi was murdered at Nungambakkam railway station on June 24.
Ramkumar, who was the accused of hacking an Infosys employee to death at a railway station in June allegedly committed suicide by “pulling and biting into a live electric wire” inside the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Preliminary reports say that, the 22-year old engineer bit a live wire jutting out of a switchboard in his cell block and was taken to a government hospital where he was brought dead.
In July, the Chennai police had claimed that Ramkumar has slit his throat when they had gone to his house in Tirunelveli to arrest him.
Ramkumar was arrested from his village after CCTV footage showed him near the crime scene following the murder of Infosys employee Swathi at Nungambakkam railway station. He was ‘infatuated’ with the victim and was angry at being rejected by her.
“Since Ramkumar had already attempted suicide, he was given several rounds of counselling by professionals in the prison. We kept a close watch on his activities. He did not show any signs of depression or suicidal tendencies,” The Hindu quoted a senior prison official.
Alleging foul play in his death, parents called for a CBI probe and their demand was backed by VCK leader Thol Thirumanavalan. Several politicians including Leader of Opposition MK Stalin demanded an independent probe into it.
Protesting the denial of permission to see his body at the Government Royapettah Hospital mortuary, Ramkumar’s relatives, advocated and cadres of some outfits blocked the road bringing traffic to a halt late in the evening.
DGP T.K Rajendran ordered a magisterial inquiry as is done in all cases of custodial deaths.
The police will soon file chargesheet in Swathi murder case and once the charge sheet is over, it will not be business as usual as all charges will be abated and the case will be closed.
