Hacking team Peace claims breach.
Worries doesn’t end for the beleaguered tech giant Yahoo as reports suggest that the company is set to confirm a massive hack that has exposed hundreds of millions of user accounts.
According to Recode, the massive breach of Yahoo servers happened some time back last month. Even though hackers had claimed that they have successfully taken down Yahoo servers, the company put up a brave face saying that it is just a rumor and that the investigation is on.
The hackers had claimed that they have got access to over 200 million user accounts. Adding to the woes of Yahoo users, the notorious hacking team called Peace also claimed that they are selling the credentials of 200 million Yahoo users who joined since 2012 in the dark web for just $1,800.
They also claimed that they have got access to the name, password and personal information like birth dates and secondary email addresses of yahoo users.
Peace is known to attack the most secure servers. Earlier they had unleashed a cyber-attack on social media websites such as MySpace, Tumblr, and LinkedIn. The aftermath of these attacks was that the user data of over 100 people went up for sale on the black web.
There is also criticism raising against Yahoo for not taking any swift measures after the spread of the rumors. Yahoo could have easily enabled a mandatory password reset so that the users could have secured their accounts.
Instead of taking any precautionary measures, the company said, “We are committed to protecting the security of our users’ information and we take any such claim very seriously. Our security team is working to determine the facts.”
If the US technology firm confirms that hack, they will have to request their users to change the Yahoo account password.
The hack, if it turns out to be true, will have a colossal effect on the 4.8 billion sales deal of Yahoo’s core business to the US- telecom giant Verizon.
