Tech subdued, health sector gains, financials down.

NEW YORK: There was mixed performance by Indian stocks in the market exchanges here during the week ended January 18th. Technology stocks, which had two weeks of Bull Run, were somewhat subdued. However, health care sector performed well and outperformed the broader indices, while Financials continued its weak trend for the second continuous week.
After the first two weeks of gain, Infosys remained flat with the previous week, while Wipro dropped 5.93 percent following the tepid outlook provided by it. Similarly, Rediff.com dropped 11.54 percent. However, Cognizant Technology Solutions bucked the trend to post a gain of 1.08 percent. BPO company WNS (Holdings) also closed higher by 8.46 percent.
In the banking sector, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank continued to fall by 2.8 percent and 0.63 percent respectively, while Sterlite Industries slipped 1.04 percent. However, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories advanced 2.67 percent and Tata Motors edged up by 0.75 percent.
During the same week, the major indices, S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrials and NASDAQ have all advanced by 0.95 percent, 1.20 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.
For the year-to-date period, Infosys remained the star performer recording a whopping 23.43 percent gain compared to the gains of S&P 500’s 4.19 percent and NASDAQ’s 3.82 percent.
