MUMBAI: The 1997 classic Kamasutra, ready to hit the screens again in 3D format on 23rd May 2014, is already making news with Sherlyn Chopra as lead protagonist. The other big move this film has made is its entry into the 86th Oscar awards.
The 3D version, directed by Rupesh Paul, will vie for an Oscar in three categories: Best Motion Picture, Original Score and Song.
This achievement makes it the only Indian film to be selected in the music list; which was announced on Monday, by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on their official website.
What’s more interesting is Kamasutra 3D becomes the only movie with five songs after The Great Gatsby to be selected in the Original Song category. The tracks composed by Chennai based music directors, Sachin and Sreejith are: Aygiri Nandini, Saawariya, I Felt, Of Soil and Har Har Mahadeva. The lyricists of these compositions are Rupesh Paul and Pratyush Prakash.
The recently launched teaser trailer portrays the film as a historical epic rather than standing up to its name and showcasing sexual love and sensuality. But the director took care of audiences’ expectation and ensured that the film’s erotic theme will be reprised.
Paul expressed on entry to the Oscars, “Probably, now we have an answer for all of them who claimed the movie to be soft porn. Hopefully, they know that soft porns are not eligible for the Academy Award nominations”.
The film did record pre-sales in most of the territories at 2013 Cannes Film Festival and the American Film Market 2013. Post good business, Kamasutra 3D is all set to make it big in the final nominations of 86th Academy Awards to be declared next month, on January 16th, at Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
