MUMBAI: It’s an accepted fact that Bollywood is a male-dominated industry, where the Khans and Kapoors rule the kingdom. But 2013 has saw some actresses who outperformed their male counterparts, surprised both audiences and critics with their mesmerising performances.
Here’s a list of tinsel town beauties who carved a path to success this year:
Deepika Padukone – No doubt, 2013 was the year for this Bangalorean beauty with four back-to-back hits, which is a rare phenomenon for an actress in Bollywood. Her performances in all four starting from ‘Race 2’ to ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ and from ‘Chennai Express’ to ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela – Ramleela’ have proved her versatility and acting talent. What makes her even more appreciable is, all the above films have crossed the 100 crore club.
Divya Dutta – Her stellar presence in front of the camera in films like ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, ‘Zila Ghaziabad’ and ‘Lootera’ as a supporting actor, have made her one of the finest in industry even with the big names in competition.
Huma Qureshi – Bollywood’s womania. With her rocking debut in 2012’s Gangs of Wasseypur, 2013 cemented this beauty as an upcoming actress with her unconventional looks. She entertained the audiences and made critics appreciate her in films like ‘Ek Thi Daayan’ and ‘D-Day’. Her troubled youngster avatar in ‘Shorts’ too was one to look out for.
Kangana Ranaut – An actress who is always in limelight either due to her clothes or her accent, Kangana is one who dares and accepts roles which others might think thousand times before taking it. Her acting skills stood out in sci-fi ‘Krrish 3’ as a mutant named Kaya, the title role in ‘Rajjo’ and the love interest of John Abraham in ‘Shootout at Wadala.’
Nimrat Kaur – From being a Cadbury girl to ‘Lunchbox’, her transformation was impressive. Her unglamorous role in Lunchbox which had a unique and simple storyline, got the attention of the audience. Her impeccable performance as a plain, lone Mumbai based housewife opposite a biggie like Irrfan Khan got her much appreciation.
Richa Chada – Who can forget this Bholi Punjaban Kudi from Fukrey? If Fukrey made her a tom boyish personality then films like ‘Shorts’ and ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela – Ramleela’ earned her the required reputation even in supporting characters which stood out amongst the crowd.
Shilpa Shukla – With only two films to her kitty, this lady gave a rock solid performance, be it her debut ‘Chak De India’ or this year’s ‘B. A. Pass.’ Her bold and strong presence of a bored housewife cum sex guru to a young boy (Shadab Kamal) is a sure sign of the beginning of a long journey in Bollywood.
Sonam Kapoor – A fashion diva to many, this Kapoor girl proved her ease in acting in films like ‘Raanjhana’ in a lead role and a small part in ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, both lauded by audiences and critics. This proves her enhancement over the years and much more to come in the following years.
