BANGALORE: A Chennai-based employee of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been arrested for murdering a co-worker of his that he was in madly in love with.
Local police have arrested a man named Venkatachalapathy, otherwise known as Venkat (23), a senior process engineer at TCS who originally hails from the Tiruvarur District town of Mannargudi. Venkat is allegedly responsible for the murder of 24 year-old Vysya, a colleague of his who he had romantic feelings for that were, apparently, unreciprocated.
According to reports, Venkat was set off after hearing that Vysya was meeting with her longtime friend and purported lover – a man named Praveen, who was in town for twenty days from his hometown of Kerala. Venkat called up Vysya to meet him at the Perungudi Station in Chennai, and got into a heated discussion in which Venkat urged her to sever ties with Praveen and be his wife.
When Vysya refused, Venkat allegedly took a knife to her, stabbing Vysya 16 times. Vysya died on the spot, and Venkat, out of either remorse or to elude jail, tried to kill himself with the same knife by stabbing himself in the abdomen. Venkat ultimately lived, but collapsed at the scene. Passersby saw the two lying on the ground, and notified police immediately.
Vysya is said to have been a shy and timid girl, brilliant but reserved. She was hired by TCS just over a year ago. Venkat has been with the company for over three years, and had pursued Vysya pretty much since she joined the company.
Police say that alcohol played a part in the attack, and a report by the New Indian Express reveals that Venkat has a shocking history of violence towards women that, had it been made public, could have saved Vysya’s life. According to their report, Venkat was arrested in 2008 under suspicion for murdering an 18 year-old girl, S. Praveena, because she would not marry him. The case went to trial in 2009, but Venkat was acquitted of all charges.
TCS management in Mumbai has said that they carry out extensive background searches on all of their employees, but have not commented on Venkat specifically. The company released an official statement expressing their shock at the murder, and condolences for the victim’s family.
