BANGALORE: This week seems to be the week of new trailers. We had the new theatrical for Ek Villain, the ‘Roll Call’ teaser for The Expendables 3, and now we have the first trailer of Bobby Jasoos, Vidya Balan’s new romantic thriller cum coming of age film; coming of age because this is the journey of Bilquis Ahmed to become Bobby Jasoos.
As we understand from the trailer, Vidya Balan’s Bobby, a homely nom-de-plume of Hyderabad, wants to be a detective. A middle class kid in India is expected to be a doctor or an engineer. One step out of line creates a lot of ruckus and here is a young woman who wants no less than to be a sleuth.
The first few seconds show Bobby begging people for detective jobs. Refused, and frustrated, she opens her very own ‘Bobby Jasoos Pvt. Ltd.’ surprising everyone in the process. Slowly the cases start coming in but it is mostly young guys asking for young girls’ number or old women asking if their son is a smoker or not. The film seems to promise a lot of good humor as we can see from the trailer.
Then comes the serious part, where Bobby gets offered a large sum of money to look for a missing person. She is happy at first but as the case progresses she begins to question herself whether she is doing the right thing. Other than all of this there is the added pressure of her boyfriend played by Ali Fazal and her father, played by Rajendra Gupta, who makes it a point to tell her that there is no place for a detective in the family.
Bobby Jasoos presents Balan in a very fresh manner. She looks like a cross between TV’s Jassi and Jab We Met’s Geet. Plus, the look of the film is also very fresh. One cannot recall the last time a Bollywood film was set in Hyderabad, let alone the streets of Hyderabad.
Throughout the trailer we see Balan in a lot of makeup, which means we will find different shades of her acting in this film. She is already known for having played so many versions of the ordinary woman (Kahaani, No one killed Jessica). This one seems to be a new addition to the list.
Bobby Jasoos releases in theaters on July 4th.
