BANGALORE: A coordinated effort by Chennai police, physicians, and citizens on Monday saved the life of a near-death patient and showed what a bustling Indian metropolis can do when all join together for a cause.
Due to the well-coordinated efforts of two surgeons at a major Chennai hospital, and the city’s traffic police, a heart needed for a transplant was able to travel 12 kilometers through the heart of the city in just about 14 minutes. The unprecedented effort was needed to get the heart from the Government General Hospital to the Fortis Malar Hospital, located in the city’s Aydar area, reports The Times of India.
The road connecting the two hospitals is known as a major avenue in Chennai, and typically carries a huge amount of traffic at all times during the day, especially when the heart was to be transported. Had there been any delay in the heart reaching its destination, odds are that the patient in question could have died, as the operation to save his life may not have been performed in time.
To accomplish the incredible feat of transporting the heart in record time, the city’s traffic police instituted what is called a “green corridor,” which essentially cleared the main road by giving red lights to the intersecting streets and avenues. This allowed the ambulance carrying the precious cargo to get through traffic without a fuss.
On top of that, the city’s denizens were reportedly supportive of the traffic complications, and willingly got out of the way to allow the ambulance to get where it needed to go in a hurry. In doing so, they helped save a life and, in no time, the city was back to business as usual.
If only traffic in Chennai could be so good every day.
