BANGALORE: Bollywood director, producer, and gossip extraordinaire Karan Johar got back in the interviewer’s chair this week to speak with the stars of his new production, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania: Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.
The two stars will reunite on the big screen on July 11, after debuting in Johar’s directorial venture, Student of the Year, back in 2012. Johar’s Dharma Productions label is producing and distributing Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania, while directing duties this time have been handed over to first-timer Shashank Khaitan.
During their nearly 30 minute-long chat with Johar, Bhatt and Dhawan talk about what it’s been like to make another movie together after just two years, the chemistry between the two of them, and how Dhawan feels something between “friendship and love” for his two-time co-star.
Both Bhatt and Dhawan are coming off of new releases that hit screens in 2014. Dhawan’s Main Tera Hero, his first film since Student of the Year, debuted in April to middling box office numbers and critical praise. Bhatt, meanwhile, had the critical smash hit Highway release in February, and followed it up with 2 States, which broke into the vaunted “100 Crore Club” at the box office and became one of the biggest hits of the year thus far.
Johar, who just wrapped up the latest season of “Koffee With Karan,” has been missing in action from the directorial scene since Student of the Year. He directed a brief vignette in the 2013 film Bombay Talkies, and is set to make his acting debut in Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma.
