BANGALORE: Telugu movie producer Daggubati Suresh Babu is confident that his latest venture, Drishyam, will have audiences filling multiplexes when the film releases this Friday.
The film, which is a remake of the Malayalee film starring Kerala superstar Mohanlal, will feature actress Meena opposite Venkatesh and Nadiya. The film’s release is highly anticipated by Telugu audiences around the world, who will get their chance to see the film starting on July 11.
The film is about a happy family whose world is turned upside down when certain members are forced to commit a heinous crime. From there, it is up to the patriarch of the family – played by Mohanlal in the original and Venkatesh in the remake – to set things right and protect his family at all costs.
In a press release, Babu stated that he feels the film’s concept is unique and brings a “new perspective to theater entertainment.” Babu called the film “a bold step in [my] career” and is “absolutely confident that [Dhrishyam] will connect with cinegoers.”
“I relished the conflict in Drishyam,” said Babu, adding that he applauds actor Venkatesh for moving out of his “comfort zone” in order to “add new dimension to his acting excellence.”
But for Babu, the film’s release has even more special meaning – it is a celebration of his studio’s 50th anniversary. That’s right; the release of Dhrishyam will celebrate a half-century of existence for Suresh Productions, one of the leading film houses in the Telugu movie industry.
“If you take a closer look at our 50 years of Suresh Productions, we have shown an ability to challenge new ways in film making and also handle multiple genres and themes,” said Babu.
The original film was a massive success in Kerala, and took home the Kerala State Film Award for Best Popular Film. Another remake, this time in Tamil, is also in the works, with screen legend Kamal Haasan said to be in the mix to take on the lead role.
For now, Babu and company hope that their version touches Telugu audiences the same way the Malayalee version hit its demographic. The trailer for the film can be viewed below:
