BANGALORE: Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin is gearing up to play the difficult and complicated part of Ophelia in William Shakespeare’s immortal play, “Hamlet” – only this adaptation of the play will take a comic look at the great tragedy.
Koechlin and the comedic “Hamlet: The Clown Prince” will take the stage with Rajat Kapoor in the highly touted play, which will be performed throughout India, reports The Times of India. Koechlin’s character in the play will be named Fifi, and will be Koechlin’s second brush with the Bard after essaying the role of Titania in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
Additionally, Koechlin has hinted that she wants to move into screenwriting and directing, the former of which she used to do with Anurag Kashyap. She has not announced a firm timeline for either of those two ventures, however, and has hinted that they may not happen anytime in the immediate future.
Recently, Koechlin went through a high-profile divorce from her husband, producer/writer/director Anurag Kashyap, and has largely kept off the screen in favor of pursuing theatrical productions. She had a big 2013, appearing in the hit film Ek Thi Daayan and the super-hit production Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
Of French descent, Koechlin grew up in India, and became a stage actor before segueing into film. She made her debut film appearance in 2009 Dev D, which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She later appeared in 2011’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which earned her a nomination for the same award and won numerous other Filmfare Awards, including Best Picture.
Koechlin is set to make a number of big-screen appearances in 2014, too. She will appear in Happy Ending, the long-in-production film co-starring Saif Ali Khan and Ileana D’Cruz.
