WASHINGTON, DC: US Democrat Congresswoman from Hawaii Tulsi Gabbard, the first practicing Hindu in the US House of Representatives, met the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday and discussed the massacre in Peshawar, Pakistan, regional security challenges and ways to curb terrorism.
Gabbard, who is on a three-week trip to India at the invitation of the Indian government, is scheduled to visit five cities across the country.
Gabbard also discussed Indo-US relations and environmental challenges, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.
She complimented Modi on his domestic initiatives for accelerating growth, promoting inclusive economic development, providing basic necessities and promoting cleanliness, it said. Gabbard also expressed keen interest in India’s spiritual and cultural traditions and spoke about her efforts to promote them in the United States.
“The potential for the relationship between the United States and India is extremely bright, and I wish to enhance this important partnership through my visit to India,” said Gabbard, in a statement to The American Bazaar, on the eve of her visit. “I was honored to accept the invitation of Prime Minister Modi and look forward to meeting with him again. Throughout this visit, I will have the opportunity to meet with a variety of people from different industries in five major cities, with the objective of investing in and strengthening the relationship between the world’s largest and oldest democracies.”
Gabbard is scheduled to address the India Ideas Conclave in Goa, deliver welcoming remarks at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry Conference, speak to students at Goa University, and participate in the Bangalore Innovation and Start-Ups technology conference. The Congresswoman will also meet with the leadership of the Indian Film Industry in Mumbai to create more opportunities for the industry in Hawaiʻi, as well as promote eco-tourism and other investments in the Aloha State.
Gabbard is a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the subcommittee on Asia-Pacific. She serves on the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, which was established in 1994 and has been the driver of the India-U.S. bilateral relationship.
