WASHINGTON, DC: A student from India studying at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, Geetika Singh, has started a fundraiser for herself on the website gofundme.com in a desperate effort to continue her studies after she lost financial support from her family.
Singh, 20, has set a goal of raising $20,300 by January 25, 2015, to pay her semester dues. Donations on the website have totaled more than $12,000 in 26 days, as of this report going up.
Here is Geetika’s story in her own words:
“My name is Geetika Singh. I am twenty years old and I am an international student studying at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. Getting into Georgia Tech has been one of the paramount achievements of my life. Coming from India, I had no idea that I would ever get the opportunity to explore the world, as I have through Georgia Tech. Going to Georgia Tech has not only opened me up to new experiences but has also made me the person I am today. However, some recent circumstances might prevent me from continuing my education at Georgia Tech. Up until my second semester of my freshman year, my parents were supporting me financially. However, due to irreconcilable differences, my parents decided to file for divorce. Prior to this decision, my parents had taken a hefty loan from the bank and after their divorce they had to spend all their savings in repaying the loan. In this time of need, my grandparents stepped in to help us financially. They paid for my second and third semester tuition fees. Things seemed to be going smoothly until my mother’s health started deteriorating. The stress and trauma of the divorce caused a blood clot in her brain, a condition known as atrial fibrillation. She needed to be hospitalized and had to undergo surgery in order to relieve her from this horrible sickness. My mother is still in recovery as the operation has been very difficult for her body to handle. My grandparents funded the entire operation and it cost them around $34,000 from their savings. Unfortunately the bad news for my family did not end there. Soon after my mother’s operation, we discovered that my father had been diagnosed with cancer, aplastic anemia to be exact. He is presently undergoing his chemotherapy and is receiving medication. Once again his treatment is being funded by my grandparents from their savings. Due to such financial burdens placed on my grandparents, they are now unable to pay my tuition fees for the coming semester at Georgia Tech.
Going to Georgia Tech has been the pinnacle of my educational career thus far. There is nothing more I want than to be able to go back to Tech and attend my fourth semester. I am determined to work as hard as possible in order to secure a better future for my family and myself. In order for me to do that I need to be able to pay $20,302 to the Bursars office by the 25th of January 2015. I had already tried to apply for the Out of State Tuition Fee Waiver, however, I was unable to obtain it as there was a limited number of spots. If I do not get to go back to Georgia Tech this coming semester, I will be unable to qualify for the Out of State Tuition Fee Waiver for the coming semesters. So my only hope now is to be able to raise enough donations in order to pay for my tuition from the Spring 2015 semester. Please help me make it back to Tech by donating whatever you can and if you are unable to donate please share this or retweet this link! Thank you so much for your help!
Forever in your debt,
Geetika.”
