In a bid to garner a widespread support for his creative expression, the director of Unfreedom — a film that was banned in India for its sensitive theme — has come with latest teasers.
Set in New York and New Delhi, Raj Amit Kumar’s Unfreedom deals with Muslim fundamentalism and lesbians’ struggle as its main theme. Nevertheless, the film has been watched through private screening in India apart from its limited theatre releases in the US.
According to Raj, his new teasers depict each of the film’s characters and what they are going through. For example, the teaser here shows a furious father, whose daughter is a lesbian. The director is expected to release more such teasers to reach to the YouTube audience.
For those who are unaware, here is a little background: Firstly, the Indian Censor Board refused to certify Unfreedom for its sensitive subjects and proposed a few cuts to the movie. The director refused to do so and approached the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT). The tribunal took an extreme step to ban the film itself in the country.
Even after the ban, the director continues to send signed petitions to the Prime Minister and Censor Board for a revoke. In the mean time, he has chosen to hold private screening in the country.
Unfreedom stars Victor Banerjee, Adil Hussain and Preeti Gupta in the lead roles. Here is the trailer:
