An annual lectureship in surgical oncology has been established in the name of Gerard V. Aranha, MD, an Indian American cancer surgeon at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill.
Also a professor in the Department of Surgery of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Aranha said that it was a great honor to have this event in his name.
“Each year, we will invite a top expert in the field to come to Loyola to share new ideas with attending physicians, residents and medical students about advances in cancer treatment”, Aranha said in a statement.
In the first annual Lectureship, which will be held on September 9, Charles J. Yeo, MD, a cancer surgeon and chair of the Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, will give a lecture.
Dr. Aranha was born in Bangalore and attended St Joseph’s Boys High School and College and obtained his medical degree from Bangalore Medical College.
He completed a residency in general surgery at Loyola and a fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Minnesota.
Earlier, Dr. Aranha worked as the director of Loyola’s Breast Care Center, associate director of the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center and chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology. He also served as chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and General Surgery at Hines VA Hospital.
Dr. Aranha has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, and is well known for his clinical acumen and outstanding surgical skills. His expertise includes pancreatic and esophageal cancers.
In 2003, Dr Aranha received the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of VA Surgeons, and in 2009 he received Loyola’s Stritch Medal, the highest honor to an alumnus or staff member. In 2015, Newsweek magazine named Dr. Aranha to its list of Top Cancer Doctors.
Dr. Aranha is past president of the C.B. Puestow Surgical Society, Chicago Surgical Society, Illinois Surgical Society and Midwest Surgical Association and vice president of the Western Surgical Association.
