A federal jury convicted Indian American doctor couple from Potomac, Maryland, on the charges fraud in a health care scheme.
Paramjit Singh Ajrawat and his wife Sukhveen Kaur Ajrawat, who run a pain management clinic in Greenbelt, have been convicted of several offenses including health care fraud, obstruction of justice, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
According to a statement by the Department of Justice, the couple defrauded federal health benefit programs including: Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, Federal Employees Health Benefits Program and the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs.
Paramjit Singh Ajrawat, a licensed physician who specialized in interventional pain management, and his wife, a licensed psychiatrist, ran Washington Pain Management Center (WPMC) located in Greenbelt.
The couple performed less expensive procedures but prepared bills for higher reimbursement amounts. Paramjit Ajrawat claimed that he had performed nerve block injections with the use of an imaging guidance machine, but he neither owned nor used such a machine, the statement said.
The Ajrawats also falsely documented patient files and caused the alteration or destruction of patient files to conceal the scheme from auditors and law enforcement, it added.
The government seeks forfeiture of at least $2.5 million, the proceeds of the scheme. US District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow has scheduled sentencing for February 1, 2016.
