Noted Indian American allopathic physician, Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharya, who practices both modern medicine and Ayurveda, and is currently a Ph.D. student at the Banaras Hindu University, has turned author, with the help of her Fulbright grant: Penguin Random House India has released ‘Everyday Ayurveda’, a lifestyle guide for those wanting to learn more about Ayurveda, while leading a modern life.
‘Everyday Ayurveda’ is a collection of 42 daily routines from the ancient Ayurvedic shastras. For laypersons seeking to improving their health, it captures the reader with vivid stories, scientific logic, health advice and patient cases.
‘Everyday Ayurveda’ begins with real stories then unfolds the reasoning behind each prescription, such as waking early, oiling the body before bath, and cleaning the ears.
“Everyday Ayurveda is not just a guidebook or a health and lifestyle title. It has also been released in the general nonfiction book category because of its lush stories and excellent writing by our new author,” said senior editor Milee Ashwarya of Penguin Random House India, in a statement.
Bhattacharya has spent 15 years learning ayurveda through the classical training of gurukula, learning how to integrate it with allopathic practice in New York and Kolkata, where she sat on the board of advisors at Emami/Zandu.
She is currently a PhD scholar at BHU, researching ayurvedic herbs and minerals that could control blood sugar. Weill Cornell Medical College in New York has retained her as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine after she post-graduated from Harvard University. The book was financially supported by the Fulbright, a prestigious grant award she received in 2013.
“What if we reconnected Ayurveda with the hands and hearts of the people? How much real health would return if people learned why they get sick in simple terms of vata, pitta, kapha, and how to re-balance with their environment? The only way to know the power of Ayurveda is to experience it in our own daily life,” said Bhattacharya. “Dinacharya is not only routines. It is a power that can set your body’s rhythms back on track with nature. Regular practice balances the body and mind, which then balances the hormones and physiology.”
Bollywood star Abhay Deol has written the foreword to the book. Padma Bhushan brothers Rajan and Sajan Mishra of Benaras and a former dean at BHU have endorsed her work.
“This ancient science is one of India’s great contributions to humanity. I believe Ayurveda’s efficacy and hope its wisdom will flourish again. This book will help resurrect this knowledge, using scientific logic for modern scientists and slokas for ancient scientists and observers. Her writing will appeal to the intelligent seeker dedicated to conscious self-care,” says Dr. Shashi Tharoor, member of Parliament from Kerala and former Under-secretary at the United Nations.
