A woman was arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly killing eight newborn puppies of a stray dog in the Jalahalli West area in north-west Bengaluru. The woman identified as Ponnamma killed the 15-day-old puppies flinging them onto a boulder, on March 15.
Neighbors of the woman, the wife of an ex-honorary flight lieutenant, alleged that she killed the puppies to teach the dog a lesson for giving birth in a drain in front of her house.
Five days after the incident, the mother dog is seen wandering around the site where the puppies are buried.
The neighbors filed a complaint with CUPA (Compassion Unlimited Plus Action) on March 17 and the NGO filed a complaint with the police leading to her arrest. She was released on bail later.
The police have registered a case under Section 93 of the Karnataka Police Act (punishment for cruelty to animals) and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and IPC Section 429 against Ponnamma.
“CUPA has lodged a complaint, but justice is still a long way off for this mother,” Suparna B Ganguly, honorary secretary at the NGO told The Times of India.
“My neighbor and I had an argument with the woman. We told her what she did was a grave sin and so cruel. The puppies did no harm to her, and she had no right to kill them in front of the mother,” the complaint said.
A CCTV camera installed near Ponnamma’s house has captured her movements and the police have collected the footage as part of the investigation.
If the charges against the accused are proved, she may face imprisonment up to five years.
“When we asked her how she could kill innocent puppies, and that she had no right to do that, she said she wanted to teach the mother a lesson so that she doesn’t litter or come near her house again,” a resident told Bangalore Mirror.
Ponnamma, however, dismissed the allegations.
“Can I kill them this way? There were seven pups, two lay dead here, I just saw them and left them there. The other two were taken away by their mother. Yes, I left the dead puppies, the second day, she left the dead puppies here. When the BBMP car came, I put the dead puppies there. These people are irritating me,” she told IBN.
“The accused was arrested and released on bail. We have procured CCTV footage and are putting together evidence. The investigation is on and the charge sheet will be submitted,” said B Aiyanna Reddy, police inspector, told Bangalore Mirror.
