In a surprise act, Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy on Wednesday said that Indian IT companies are acting as an immigration agent for its employees, reported The Times of India.
He said that IT companies have the responsibility to create local jobs too as they are working on a global basis.
“My belief was that a corporation that has global aspiration has to be fair to its global employees. All Indian companies guarantee visas, they guarantee green cards. The whole exercise has become as if they are immigration agents. I am sorry to say that. Indian companies behave as if they are agents for their employees to cross the Atlantic,” Murthy was quoted as saying.
He was speaking at the Indian School of Business (ISB), where he was conferred the ISB Honorary Distinguished Fellowship.
Murthy’s statement came at a time when the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is taking anti-H-1B visa stance in his rallies. He has also opposed the practice of outsourcing by American companies, to replace jobs held by American with foreign labor.
“The H-1B program is neither high-skilled nor immigration: these are temporary foreign workers, imported from abroad, for the explicit purpose of substituting for American workers at lower pay. I remain totally committed to eliminating rampant, widespread H-1B abuse and ending outrageous practices such as those that occurred at Disney in Florida when Americans were forced to train their foreign replacements. I will end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labor program, and institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program. No exceptions,” a statement published earlier by Donald Trump had said.
“In India, capitalism is at a very nascent stage. Therefore, you (the students) have to be an evangelist. You have to lead simple lives. We need compassionate capitalism which is about treating every employee with respect and dignity,” Murthy added.
Murthy also said that he had implemented a visa independent global delivery system in Infosys. But it was stopped when he left the organization in 2014.
