Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani informed the Lok Sabha on Monday that the ministry has asked Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) to include the study of Sanskrit Language in the curriculum, reported Press Trust of India (PTI).
The move is aimed at facilitating the study of science and technology as reflected in Sanskrit literature.
A report filed by the committee headed by former Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami to the ministry has suggested that the inclusion of Sanskrit study in IITs may facilitate the study of science and technology as reflected in ancient Indian literature.
Inter-disciplinary study of Sanskrit and modern subjects will also be possible with this, Irani said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
“Accordingly, IITs have been requested to teach the Sanskrit language especially with reference to the study of works which contain scientific knowledge,” Irani was quoted as saying by PTI.
In 2000, the National Democratic Alliance government had asked premier educational institutions to include Sanskrit courses. Many institutions followed the instruction and started Sanskrit courses since that.
