A US court has sentenced a 32-year-old Indian-origin man to 19 years for stalking a girl continuously for over a decade, starting from Delhi where they were classmates to the US where she arrived for pursuing higher studies.
Collin County Criminal District Attorney Greg Willis pronounced the judgement on Wednesday, sentencing Jitender Singh to 19 years in prison.
“The jury put an end to this victim’s decade-long stalking nightmare,” Willis said in a statement.
Singh first met the girl, whose name has not been revealed by the court while they were in the college as classmates. Singh is believed to have approached the victim with marriage request back in 2006, which she refused.
Singh was enraged by the rejection and started to follow her all the way home and sometimes even threatening her. This continued till both of them completed graduation.
When the victim got admission in the New York University to continue her higher studies, she thought it could be the end of her ordeal. But, she was shocked after coming to know that Singh assaulted her father back home after which a formal police complaint was lodged against him.
Even though the court convicted him, Singh made an appeal and agreement with authorities to stay away from the victim.
When things were returning normal, Singh, like a psychopath, once again showed up to the victim, and this time, he traveled all the way to the United States and tried to join the same university that the victim was studying at.
Even though he was denied admission and asked to stay away from the university premises, Singh didn’t back away from keeping a watch of the victim. When she traveled to California for her internship, Singh followed her and later back to New York.
In 2011, the victim got an IT Job and she moved to Plano, Texas. Singh followed her and one day broke into her house, getting assistance from a blacksmith, who was misled.
Singh took the girl’s passport, social security card and other documents as well as several of her jewellery.
“A suspicious neighbor called 911 and Plano police officer Michael Weaver and others located Singh in the parking lot of the victim’s apartment with her property,” read the statement from the Collin County district attorney’s office, according to ABC News.
Singh’s 19-year sentence include 17-year for burglary and two more years for fraudulent use of information.
