The unbeatable spirit and courage of Raghav Chandak, a 16-year-old from Kolkata, has proved that everything is possible, even in adversities.
Chandak, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), made everyone proud by scoring 98.8 percent marks in Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE) examination, reported Press Trust of India.
A student of Kolkata’s Heritage School, Chandak was not able to attend classes for several months after he was diagnosed with ALL in April last year. He could attend his classes for only two months.
“He was in the hospital for one-and-a-half months at a stretch. And then he had to go for about seven days each month to the hospital for chemotherapy which weakened his immune system but not the spirit to fight,” his father Manoj Chandak told PTI.
The school authorities extended him full support. They arranged a special bench for him whenever he attended the classes as there was a chance of infection spreading to others. The teachers were also keen to help him and gave him the freedom to call them anytime for clearing doubts.
Class notes were specially arranged for Chandak when he was undergoing treatment at the Tata Medical Centre.
“We thought he will not be able to appear for the exams. We went to the school and told them about it. They said, ‘you take care of the medical condition and we will take care of his studies’,” his father was quoted as saying by PTI.
“I would not have been able to do this without everyone’s support – my parents, teachers, friends, cousin and our family doctor,” Raghav Chandak said.
