Four Indian American physicians have been elected to the American Association of Physicians: Ravi Bhatia, Smita Bhatia, Victor Thannickal and Arun Sanyal.
Spouses Dr. Ravi Bhatia and Dr. Smita Bhatia, both internationally known cancer researchers, joined the University of Alabama (UAB) in 2015.
Ravi Bhatia is director of the UAB Division of Hematology and Oncology and the deputy director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Smita Bhatia is director of the Institute for Cancer Outcomes and Survivorship in the School of Medicine, vice chair for outcomes in the Department of Pediatrics, and associate director for cancer outcomes research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Thannickal joined UAB in 2009 as professor of medicine and pathology and director, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. He received his BA from Southern California College and his MD from Oral Roberts University School of Medicine.
Sanyal is a gastroenterologist, working for Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College.
