A man waving an 8-inch knife was shot dead by police on Wednesday in Manhattan after a clash with cops outside a Hell’s Kitchen supermarket, police said.
The armed and angry man, after a belligerent attempt to buy beer at 8:20 a.m., pulled the folding blade during an ensuing sidewalk wrestling match with one cop, said NYPD Deputy Chief James O’Neill, reported the New York Daily News.
Police fired nine times when the attacker ignored their orders to drop the weapon and instead charged them in a showdown captured in graphic detail by a nearby security camera, cops said.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene of shooting and screaming once police opened fire at the busy intersection near several Broadway theaters where the dead man once worked as a freelance stagehand, sources said.
Garry Conrad, 46, most recently handled odd jobs at the Shubert Theater on W. 44 St., about five blocks south of his death, sources said. He was working there as recently as last month.
Twin rivulets of Conrad’s blood flowed down the street alongside the lifeless body. One of the officers was crying on the street when the shooting finally stopped.
